"It was easy to come out as trans. It was hard to come out as Republican," Caitlyn Jenner said Wednesday at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland. Jenner received applause at the Big Tent Brunch event, hosted by conservative group American Unity Fund and featuring TV host Montel Williams, USA Today reports. "Thank you, thank you, but they already nominated Donald last night," she told the crowd. "But I can make a difference."

Jenner talked politics with American Unity Fund President Margaret Hoover, fielding questions about her Republican credentials. She specified that, even though the Obama administration has helped the trans community, her vote lies with the GOP – partly because of her father's background in the military. "If my dad knew what was going on in this country when he fought so hard, I think he'd be very disappointed," she said. "Because of that, I feel like our best hope to get back to a constitutional government ... is a Republican Party."

Jenner also criticized North Carolina's HB2, or "the Bathroom Bill," saying, "I haven't used a men's room in a year and a half. I follow the rules. I never flush a feminine product down the toilet." She emphasized that other conservatives need to engage with the LGBTQ community. "I think the Republican Party needs to understand," she said. "They need to know people who are trans."
